Mayor Michael C. Butler to Appear on CBS Mornings with Nate Burleson to Discuss Orangeburg Massacre and All-Star Bowling Reopening
National spotlight highlights truth, remembrance, and the City of Orangeburg’s commitment to historical preservation
Orangeburg, SC – Orangeburg Mayor Michael C. Butler will appear on CBS Mornings in an upcoming interview with Nate Burleson on Thursday, February 5 between 7:00 AM – 9:00 AM to discuss the legacy of the Orangeburg Massacre and the reopening of the historic All-Star Bowling Lane, a site deeply connected to the events of 1968.
The national interview will focus on the importance of acknowledging difficult history, honoring the lives lost, and ensuring that the story of Orangeburg is preserved and shared accurately for future generations. The reopening of All-Star Bowling Lane represents a meaningful step toward remembrance, education, and community healing.
“The Orangeburg Massacre is a pivotal moment in our nation’s civil rights history, yet for far too long it has gone largely unrecognized outside of South Carolina,” Mayor Butler said. “This conversation is about honoring those who lost their lives, acknowledging the pain endured by our community, and making sure that this history is never forgotten. As Orangeburg’s first African American mayor, I empathize with the families of those fallen students who peacefully protested inequalities, and I am committed to honoring their legacy.”
On February 8, 1968, three young African American men were killed during a protest near the All-Star Bowling Lane, making it the deadliest incident on a college campus during the civil rights era. For decades, the site remained closed, symbolizing a painful chapter in Orangeburg’s history.
The renovations of All-Star Bowling Lane marks a renewed commitment by the City of Orangeburg to historical preservation, public education, and honest dialogue about the past. Mayor Butler’s appearance on CBS Mornings provides a national platform to ensure the events of 1968 – and their lasting impact – are understood within the broader context of civil rights history.
