City of Orangeburg Officially Passes Hate Intimidation Ordinance
Ordinance establishes penalties for acts of hate intimidation, reinforcing the city’s commitment to safety and equality

Orangeburg, SC – The City of Orangeburg is proud to announce that City Council has passed the Hate Intimidation Ordinance, aimed at protecting residents from acts of intimidation or harassment based on race, religion, gender, sexual orientation, and other protected classes. Therefore, it would be unlawful for any person to cause fear of harm, injury, or damage to a victim or property.

The ordinance establishes clear penalties for violations, including:

  • A fine of up to $500
  • A misdemeanor charge or up to 30 days in jail, or both at the discretion of the judge

Mayor Michael C. Butler emphasizes the significance of this legislation. “Passing the Hate Intimidation Ordinance is a major step in ensuring that every resident of Orangeburg feels safe, respected, and valued in our community. Our city stands firmly against acts of hate and intimidation, and this ordinance reinforces that commitment.”

“No one should live in fear of intimidation or harassment, and our city government is taking a strong stance to prevent it,” said Sidney Evering, II, city administrator. “Injustice will not prevail in Orangeburg, and we want everyone to know that they are welcomed to live and visit our inclusive city.

The City of Orangeburg encourages residents to report any incidents of hate intimidation to local law enforcement. The ordinance reflects the city’s ongoing dedication to public safety, civil rights, and a welcoming environment for all citizens.
