City of Orangeburg Awarded State Grant to Fund New Digital Marquee at Stevenson Auditorium
The City of Orangeburg is proud to announce that a new full-facade digital marquee for Stevenson Auditorium will be fully funded through a grant awarded by the South Carolina Department of Commerce as part of its Rural Development and Strategic Planning Initiative pilot program.
This significant state investment allows the City to modernize one of its most important cultural and community venues without placing additional burden on local taxpayers.
A Strategic State Investment in Rural Communities
The Rural Development and Strategic Planning Initiative pilot program is designed to support economic growth and revitalization efforts in South Carolina’s rural communities. The grant, awarded to Orangeburg, recognizes Stevenson Auditorium as a critical asset in the City’s economic development and community engagement strategy.
The new full-facade LED digital marquee will transform the front of the auditorium into a dynamic, high-visibility display capable of promoting concerts, theatrical performances, and community events in real time.
Enhancing Economic Development
City leaders view the digital marquee not only as a visual upgrade, but as an economic development tool that will:
- Increase attendance at performances and events
- Improve marketing visibility for touring acts and regional programming
- Attract rental opportunities
- Support local arts organizations
- Drive additional foot traffic downtown
With thousands of vehicles traveling through the area each day, the new digital display will significantly enhance awareness of events and programming, helping generate additional revenue for the facility while supporting nearby restaurants, retailers, and hospitality businesses.
Strengthening Community Engagement
In addition to event promotion, the digital marquee will serve as a communication platform for:
- Public safety messaging
- Weather alerts
- Civic announcements
- Community celebrations and recognitions
This added functionality strengthens the City’s ability to communicate quickly and effectively with residents.
City Leadership Expresses Gratitude
City Administrator Sidney Evering expressed appreciation for the state’s support of Orangeburg’s revitalization efforts.
“We are extremely grateful to the South Carolina Department of Commerce for selecting Orangeburg as a recipient of this Rural Development and Strategic Planning Initiative grant,” said Evering. “This funding allows us to enhance Stevenson Auditorium, increase its economic impact, and further position Orangeburg as a regional destination for arts, culture, and community events—without impacting our local taxpayers. We sincerely thank the Department of Commerce for their partnership and investment in our city.”
A Bright Future for Stevenson Auditorium
Stevenson Auditorium has long been a cornerstone venue for the community. The addition of a full-facade digital marquee reflects a broader commitment by City Council to modernize public facilities, strengthen economic development, and enhance quality of life for residents.
The City of Orangeburg looks forward to showcasing a brighter, more visible future for Stevenson Auditorium—made possible through the partnership and support of the South Carolina Department of Commerce.
