Summers Memorial Park/Fitness Trail

City Council Building
Summers Memorial Park/Fitness Trail
The City of Orangeburg Parks and Recreation Department is working to develop the Summers Memorial Park Fitness Trail on Summers Ave. This project is being funded by a $15,000 P.A.R.D. Grant and a $30,000 local donation for a total project cost of $45,000. The Fitness Trail will enable Citizens the opportunity to excercise by walking, which is the most popular form of excercise in the United States. Tree bark will be the walking surface for this three quarter mile long trail system. Being able to exercise while enjoying the natural beauty of the Park, makes this a unique opportunity. The Trail's walking excercise benefit will be supplemented by a twelve exercise stations which will feature instructional signage and permanent exercise equipment to use as the walker follows the Trail. Other amenities associated with the project will include three renovated foot bridges, entrance and distance signage, a gazebo, a water fountain, benches, and trash recepticles. The entrance to the Trail will be on Webster St. near the intersection with Summers Ave. and adjacent to the First Presbyterian Church. Fifteen paved parking spaces are located at the entrance.

Angel of Hope Garden

Angel of Hope
Angel of Hope Garden
The Angel of Hope Project is another unique feature of the Edisto Memorial Gardens. There are over 90 of the Angel sculptures around the U.S., but this is the only one in South Carolina. The Angel of Hope is dedicated to the children that have lost their lives through natural causes or accidents. This monument and garden is a place for healing and meditation for the parents, other family members, and friends of these children. The Project is a joint effort of the City of Orangeburg Parks and Recreation Dept. and the Angel of Hope Committee, which will raise funds for the Project. In addition, to the Angel of Hope sculpture, the area will feature beautiful landscaping, brick pavers, and dedicatory wall and an area for recognition bricks. The Times and Democrat Article
