High Steppin’ Cloggers Classes
Classes are available for all levels of clogging for ages 3 years and up. The class season begins in September and runs through May. Classes meet once a week and are held at the Youth Canteen which is located at 1620 Middleton Street. Registration is held each August.
Students will have fun learning clogging steps and dances, circle figures, and clogging terminology. Students will also have the opportunity to perform at the Christmas clogging program at
Stevenson Auditorium, nursing homes, the Orangeburg Festival of Roses, and the year-end clogging recital, also at
Stevenson Auditorium.
Celeste Smith instructs clogging. Celeste has been involved in clogging for 28 years. She has performed at the “Grand Ole Opry” in Nashville and with the Palmetto State Cloggers. She has been instructing with the City Recreation Department for 23 years, and she continues to attend workshops to keep current with popular trends in clogging.
Pre-clogging class is for ages 3 through 5. This class may include new students as well as children who took pre-clogging last year that fall into this age category. Children will learn clogging movements and steps that will prepare them for the combinations they will learn as they get older. There will be a limit of 10 children in pre-clogging classes! Please register early to get a space in the class you choose!
5 & 6 year old class is for students who may or may not have had pre-clogging. Most of these children have been instructed to a few basic steps during their year as a pre-clogger. There will be a limit of 12 children in 5 & 6 year old classes! Please register early to get a space in the class you choose!
Beginners class is for ages 7 and up. The purpose of this class is to learn the basic steps of clogging. This will include some children who have taken pre-clogging. This class may also include cloggers who have previously had some clogging if the instructor feels they need further instruction with the basic steps.
Other classes are made up of participants who have had past clogging experience. Each child will be placed on a team according to their ability. The instructor will place each child in a class which best suits that child’s individual ability, regardless of the number of years a child has taken lessons, as the number of years does not always determine a child’s level. If there is a time conflict, we will change your child’s class.
