Completed Projects

Summers Memorial Park/Fitness Trail

The City of Orangeburg Parks and Recreation Department worked to develop the Summers Memorial Park Fitness Trail on Summers Ave. This project was funded by a $15,000 P.A.R.D. Grant and a $30,000 local donation for a total project cost of $45,000. The Fitness Trail enables Citizens the opportunity to exercise by walking, which is the most popular form of exercise in the United States. Tree bark is the walking surface for this three quarter mile long trail system. Being able to exercise while enjoying the natural beauty of the Park makes this a unique opportunity. The Trail's walking exercise benefit is supplemented by a twelve exercise stations which will feature instructional signage and permanent exercise equipment to use as the walker follows the Trail. Other amenities associated with the project include three renovated foot bridges, entrance and distance signage, a gazebo, a water fountain, benches, and trash receptacles. The entrance to the Trail is on Webster St. near the intersection with Summers Ave. and adjacent to the First Presbyterian Church. Fifteen paved parking spaces are located at the entrance.

Angel of Hope Garden

The Angel of Hope Project is another unique feature of the Edisto Memorial Gardens. There are over 90 of the Angel sculptures around the U.S., but this is the only one in South Carolina. The Angel of Hope is dedicated to the children that have lost their lives through natural causes or accidents. This monument and garden is a place for healing and meditation for the parents, other family members, and friends of these children. The Project is a joint effort of the City of Orangeburg Parks and Recreation Dept. and the Angel of Hope Committee, raised funds for the Project. In addition, to the Angel of Hope sculpture, the area features beautiful landscaping, brick pavers, and dedicatory wall and an area for recognition bricks.

Veteran's Memorial

Located in the beautiful Edisto Memorial Gardens, the Park has great meaning to the community as it honors our veterans.  Very distinguished in appearance, the Veterans Memorial features a 25 foot high obelisk, six granite sections representing the branches of service, and granite plaques identifying the wars in which our country has been engaged in.  Nine flags grace the park, representing the United States, the state of South Carolina, the six branches of service, and the POW/MIA’S.  Also, located in the park are six granite naming panels recognizing those individuals from Orangeburg County that made the ultimate sacrifice while serving our country in times of war.  Memorial bricks are available for purchase to honor our veterans.
